Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that depict the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location from which the pictures were from relied on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
