The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

Overall, the opening appears stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.
