The network's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "Iâm incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Thereâs something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family go about their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
âThere's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,â noted Cappa. âIt feels as if we have to know weâre the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.â
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
