The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people were killed and over 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
