Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any prominent prize-giving event approaches, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
