Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
