Schools in Nigeria's northern region have become frequent targets for militant organizations

Gun-wielding individuals have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a educational institution for young women in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The gang of attackers stormed the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their living quarters, according to a statement.

An educational worker was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.

Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.

Community members told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.

The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.

In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for weapon-carrying factions, who frequently execute kidnappings to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The assault in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis afflicting the area, causing relatives in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Protection challenge in Nigeria's northern territories has intensified significantly in recent months, with schools suffering the most of the unrest.
