Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using these drugs must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the way of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
