Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
